If my account gets taken down…

Tumblr’s new bot / algorithm is really fucking up people’s accounts.  It’s hiding people’s posts from the search results.  And it’s taking down a ton of accounts that are suspected of being bots.  Apparently, you might be a bot if you: [a] post a lot, [b] a lot of bot accounts reblog from you [c] post external links.  I don’t know that anyone is 100% sure of the criteria being used to auto-ban, but that’s what I’m hearing so far.  

And they FOR SURE have been taking down accounts.  A very popular account (140k followers), one that I’m familiar with, has been taken down today.  For no reason.  They’re a real person, not a bot.  There’s nothing inappropriate about their blog.  It’s ridiculous.  Tumblr is just getting worse and worse, I swear.

So in light of their new system, I’ve decided to use my Patreon page as a way to update everyone IN CASE my account gets taken down.

IF that happens, please visit the page and I’ll post where my new account is, any updates on how the fight to get my old account back is going, etc.  I hear it’s pretty difficult to get your old accounts back, so fingers crossed that doesn’t happen to me.

Update: tumblr just recently instituted a new ban (starting mid-December) which will take down any “adult content”.  It’s new algorithm has already flagged my posts.  I’m literally posting news that has zero sexually explicit content in it, and tumblr is saying that it’s “adult content”.  So this is fun.  Hopefully this ban / algorithm (as well as the old ones) will be reversed.  Either way, the Patreon is where you can go in the event my account gets taken down for any reason.  So whatever happens, I’ll continue to reblog this post as a way to let everyone know where you can find me.

When I was 10, my mom made me wear a bra and it felt like a punishment for being different.

When I was 10, I took the bra off when changing for gymnastics and accidentally dropped it in the school hallway. A teacher picked it up and said, “Oh, this must belong to you” and handed it back to me in front of everyone. I quit gymnastics.

When I was 11, I thought maybe the boobs would be okay so long as they didn’t get any bigger than would fit in my hand, so I kept measuring it, but they did.

When I was 12, I started wearing two or three sports bras to smush them down, until one day a classmate said, “Are you wearing two bras?!” while laughing.

When I was 13, a boy told me he wanted to squeeze my boobs “until they popped.”

When I was 14, I got cast in a play as an older character and a classmate told me I got the role because I had boobs.

When I was 17, my mom told me to return a swimsuit because it would be too distracting for my boyfriend’s father.

When I was 21, I got properly fitted for a bra and everyone felt the need to tell me how much better my boobs looked.

When I was 26, I got pregnant and my immediate fear was that my boobs would get bigger.

When I was 28, I got shamed for trying to feed my screaming baby in public without a cover.

When I was 28, people asked me “why are you bothering to use a breastfeeding cover?”

When I was 30, people gave me weird looks that I wasn’t yelling at my kid for putting their hand on my boob.

When I was 31, I avoided going to the beach or pool because I didn’t want to have to deal with boobs in a swimsuit.

When I was 32, I got asked, again, “why don’t you get a breast reduction?”

When I was 33, I watched a 5yo girl get shamed for running around in sweltering heat without a shirt on and had to reprimand a bunch of tween boys who thought it was okay to shame her for doing something they do all the time.

When I was 34, my kid kept patting my breast and saying “Mommy’s squishy breast!!” They will never see me express any shame about tits, because I want them to have a different mindset than I had. Yes, boobs are nice! They’re squishy! They’re fun! That’s the end of that.

I’m 35 and no longer give a fuck. I don’t care anymore. As a teenager my tits were covered in stretch marks. They’ve been engorged with milk. My nipple changed shape with pregnancy. Give it another couple decades and my breasts will probably be all wrinkly. It’s sexual when I’m using it sexually. I don’t fucking care, and I won’t be ashamed anymore. 

Every time a policy or cultural hangup treats people with breasts differently, it fucks us over. 

Tumblr’s new policy makes an active choice to participate in this culture of shame. By classifying “female-presenting nipples” as explicit material, Tumblr has taken a stance that any chest or breast that differs from a male default is worthy of shame and unavoidably sexual. The idea that breasts are shameful and unavoidably sexual is exactly what fucked me up for so much of my life.

Stop shaming people for having bodies.

China is the country that sends the most rockets into orbit. But commercially, it does not shade SpaceX and the USA.

During the Cold War, the United States had its eyes focused on rockets and satellites of the USSR. In recent years, it is the space activities of China that preoccupy US strategists.

China, whose space program is run by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), today sends more rockets into orbit than any other country - 39 last year, compared to 31 US, 20 Russian and … 8 by Europe.

She just landed a vehicle on the hidden side of the Moon (a historic first), will build a station in Earth orbit in the 2020s, and wants a “taikonaut” to walk on the moon in the next decade - he would be the first Man since 1972. No Russian went there.

The country spends more than Russia and Japan on its civilian and military space programs. China’s opaque budget was estimated at $ 8.4 billion in 2017 by the OECD. This is far behind the 48 billion civilians and military spent by the United States, said analyst Phil Smith, Bryce Tech firm. But much more than the budget of the Russian civilian program, slashed to three billion dollars.

Methodically, the Chinese leaders have responded, with a few decades of lag, the stages of the development of major nations: first satellite in 1970, first Chinese in space in 2003, first mooring an inhabited ship to a module in orbit in 2012, activation of a Chinese competitor to the GPS, the Beidou system …

“If they continue on this trajectory, they will quickly eclipse Russia in terms of space technologies,” says Todd Harrison, an expert on space military issues at the CSIS think tank in Washington.

Commercially, Chinese rockets do not threaten the satellite launch market, dominated by SpaceX in the United States. They almost exclusively launch Chinese government satellites.

For space exploration, Chinese progress also does not overshadow US projects. The boss of NASA congratulated the Chinese for the mission Chang'e-4. An American law of 2011 de facto prevents any space cooperation with Beijing, but the US Congress remains free to lift the restriction.

The real rivalry concerns two areas: the short-term military, and the long-term the exploitation of space resources. The exploitation of minerals or water on the Moon or asteroids, especially to produce rocket fuels, remains a distant prospect, but American start-ups are already working on it. Who will settle a dispute between Chinese and Americans on a lunar ice vein?

Unlike the period of the Cold War, the new space conquest unfolds in a relative legal vacuum. In the 1960s and 1970s, Washington and Moscow had negotiated several space treaties, mainly to ensure scientific cooperation and to ban weapons of mass destruction in outer space.

“These treaties are too vague to legally apply to issues like the exploitation of mineral resources in outer space,” says Frans von der Dunk, a professor of space law at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

These treaties are mostly overtaken by new military technologies: anti-satellite lasers, cyberattacks, jamming transmissions, missiles fired from Earth to destroy a satellite, as China tested in 2007 and continues to do it blank.

There is no equivalent of the laws of war for space. One satellite colliding with another, is this an “attack”? How to define the proportionality of a response? Should civilian satellites be protected from retaliation, but what about satellites for civil and military use? And how to respond to a cyber attack whose author is uncertain?

“The Chinese have done experiments to interfere in our communications,” says Jack Beard of the University of Nebraska’s Space Law Program. He recalls that civil satellites and NASA were attacked in 2007 and 2008 by pirates for several minutes.

“The United States is vulnerable because it has fallen behind threats to our space systems,” says Todd Harrison. But the dialogue with Beijing is almost zero, unlike what existed with Moscow during the Cold War. “In case of a crisis in space with China, I am not sure that our army knows who to call,” says the expert.

But observers nuance the portrait of China as an aggressive opponent of America. “Some in the United States exaggerate China’s role as a major strategic rival to fund the space projects they support,” said Brian Weeden of the Secure World Foundation in Washington, while NASA is fighting to maintain its budget.

In science fiction, AIs tend to malfunction due to some technicality of logic, such as that business with the laws of robotics and an AI reaching a dramatic, ironic conclusion.

Content regulation algorithms tell me that sci-fi authors are overly generous in these depictions.

“Why did cop bot arrest that nice elderly woman?”

“It insists she’s the mafia.”

“It thinks she’s in the mafia?”

“No. It thinks she’s an entire crime family. It filled out paperwork for multiple separate arrests after bringing her in.”

I have to comment on this because this is touching on something I see a lot of people (including Tumblr staff and everyone else who uses these kind of deep learning systems willy-nilly like this) don’t quite get: “Deep Reinforcement Learning” AI like these engage with reality in a fundamentally different way from humans. I see some people testing the algorithm and seeing where the “line” is, wondering whether it looks for things like color gradients, skin tone pixels, certain shapes, curves, or what have you. All of these attempts to understand the algorithm fail because there is nothing to understand. There is no line, because there is no logic. You will never be able to pin down the “criteria” the algorithm uses to identify content, because the algorithm does not use logic at all to identify anything, only raw statistical correlations on top of statistical correlations on top of statistical correlations. There is no thought, no analysis, no reasoning. It does all its tasks through sheer unconscious intuition. The neural network is a shambling sleepwalker. It is madness incarnate. It knows nothing of human concepts like reason. It will think granny is the mafia.

This is why a lot of people say AI are so dangerous. Not because they will one day wake up and be conscious and overthrow humanity, but that they (or at least this type of AI) are not and never will be conscious, and yet we’re relying on them to do things that require such human characteristics as logic and any sort of thought process whatsoever. Humans have a really bad tendency to anthropomorphize, and we’d like to think the AI is “making decisions” or “thinking,” but the truth is that what it’s doing is fundamentally different from either of those things. What we see as, say, a field of grass, a neural network may see as a bus stop. Not because there is actually a bus stop there, or that anything in the photo resembles a bus stop according to our understanding, but because the exact right pixels in the photo were shaded in the exact right way so that they just so happened to be statistically correlated with the arbitrary functions it created when it was repeatedly exposed to pictures of bus stops over and over. It doesn’t know what grass is, what a bus stop is, but it sure as hell will say with 99.999% certainty that one is in fact the other, for reasons you can’t understand, and will drive your automated bus off the road and into a ditch because of this undetectable statistical overlap. Because a few pixels were off in just the right way in just the right places and it got really, really confused for a second.

There, I even caught myself using the word “confused” to describe it. That’s not right, because “confused” is a human word. What’s happening with the AI is something we don’t have the language to describe.

Anyway what’s more, this sort of trickery can be mimicked. A human wouldn’t be able to figure it out, but another neural network can easily guess the statistical filters it uses to identify things and figure out how to alter images with some white noise in exactly the right way to make the algorithm think it’s actually something else. It’ll still look like the original image, just with some pixelated artifacts, but the algorithm will see it as something completely different. This is what’s known as a “single pixel attack.” I am fairly confident porn bot creators might end up cracking the content flagging algorithm and start putting up some weirdly pixelated porn anyway, and all of this will be in vain. All because Tumblr staff decided to rely on content moderation via slot machine.

TL;DR bots are illogical because they’re actually unknowable eldritch horrors made of spreadsheets and we don’t know how to stop them or how they got here, send help

  • wordpress allows you to directly import whole tumblr blogs, and if i recall correctly it’s something both dreamwidth and pillowfort have said they are working on.
  • if you have some knowledge of computers you can try this github solution which uses a python script to download your whole blog to your computer. even if you don’t know anything about programming or the command line they give a very good beginners tutorial on how to use it so you should still give it a shot!

I had, until recently, 120,000 followers. I did my best to curate and block blackhats. I didn’t post anything explicit, although I certainly posted nudes. I blocked people who tried to submit inappropriate photos. I had strict rules about posting shots that were clearly stolen or pirated. I didn’t post intercourse or insertion. I took down anything anyone told me they wanted down. 

Anyway, screw you for assuming *I’m* the problem. That *my* followers are the problem. A simple, thoughtful solution *is* the issue–you just didn’t want to think about it. So you’ll die, and the 120,000 accounts that followed me, they’re just… gone, too.
